Singapore
is developing three of its 63 offshore
islands into resorts for both tourists
and residents. Once completed, St.John's,
Lazarus and Renget Islands, off the southern
coast of Singapore will have more than
200 shops and restaurants as well as a
five-star hotel, a three star-hotels and
some 1,800 residential homes.
Two
causeways will link the three islands
together to facilitate transportation
and to make the waters calm enough for
sea sports. Tourists will then be able
to indulge in windsurfing, water skiing
and other sea sports in an idyllic location
while enjoying modern amenities such as
fresh water, telephones and electricity.
The
reclamation work which has begun on the
islands, is expected to be completed in
2002 and the resort will be ready by 2007.
This
development would be important for Singapore's
tourism industry. Sun-loving tourists
coming to Singapore would not only have
the lovely beaches of Sentosa and the
East Coast to choose from, but also those
of St.John's, Lazarus and Renget Islands.
