It's All Trash
Part 3: The Three R's

By now, you should be aware that refuse disposal is no small feat. How, then, can you as an individual, play your part to help the situation?

You can do so by practicing the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Reduce – Cut down on the amount of trash you generate. For example, when you go shopping, bring your own carrier. This will decrease the need to get plastic or paper carriers from the vendors.

Reuse – Do not throw away things that can be reused, such as plastic bags.

Recycle – Some things can be given a new lease of life rather than dumping them away. For example, used papers and newspapers can be sent for recycling. In the home, plastic and glass bottles can also be used as vases.

By practicing these three R’s, you will be playing an important role in helping to control the amount of refuse we generate. Do not under-estimate this role. If everyone chips in a little effort, it can accumulate into something major.

In land-scarce Singapore, housing the increasing population is already quite a headache. Despite this, we still have to ‘give up’ precious land to dump our trash. As such, it is important that we control the amount of refuse we generate, so that we can make better use of the little land we have.
