| Italy has been facing a decreasing
population problem since the end of World War II, with its fertility rate constantly lower
than the natural replacement rate of two, and decreasing over the years. Right now, Italy has the lowest birth rate in the whole
world.
With a decreasing population, in order to sustain
economic growth, Italy would have to depend on immigrants to help contribute to the
economy.
However, fascist thinking of the Italians has
caused them to not accept immigrants readily. Thus, there are strict laws restricting the
inflow of migrants.
But, the situation is not as bad in some schools,
where a large percentage of the students are young immigrants who picked up the Italian
language and are not treated differently from the native Italians.
Can Italy resolve its population problem? Would
all Italians be willing to accept immigrants eventually?
We can only wait and see. |
