The need for
inter-cultural understanding
In an ever-shrinking world, it is
important for the various peoples to live in harmony with each other. Geographical
boundaries that used to define the various cultures have given way -- thanks to mass
migration.
People of various races and religions
are now living together and many have learnt to appreciate the wealth of culture that they
are exposed to.
For instance, Australia -- no longer
the white man's continent that it used to be 50 years ago, is now a bustling country that
allows white men to appreciate Indian cuisine in Sydney or pay visits to their Chinese
neighbours during the Lunar New Year.
And Australia is not an exception.
With the globalisation of the various communities, we can expect to see more of
inter-cultural exchanges across and within continents and enjoy the benefits of such
exchanges.
However, if we flip through the
newspapers, it is uncommon for us to read of crimes committed against minority groups.
Is globalisation of the various
communities -- the meeting and interaction of peoples of various races, religions and
languages, leading us to more conflicts?
